NOMINATIONS

Notice to the municipal electors of the

Village of Oil Springs

 

Persons may be nominated as candidates in the Municipal Election for the positions set out below by filing a nomination paper in the prescribed form along with a $100 filing fee payable by cash, certified cheque or money order.  Identification of the candidate must be produced at the time the nomination paper is submitted. A $200.00 filing fee is required for the Head of Council of a Municipality.

 

Nomination papers may be filed anytime during normal office hours from January 4, 2010 to Thursday, September 9th, 2010.  On Nomination Day, Friday, September 10th, 2010, nomination papers may be filed anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

 

Nomination papers may be filed at the office of the Clerk of the Municipality in which a person intends to run for office, or in the case of School Board, the office of the Clerk designated to receive nominations for that particular office.  Nomination forms and full particulars of the nomination process can be obtained from the office of the Clerk in which nomination papers must be filed.

 

Where more certified candidates are nominated for an office than the number required to fill the office, an election will be held.  Notice of the date and time of the regular and advance voting, as well as the last day for making application for a certificate to vote by proxy will be advertised.

 

If, by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10th, 2010 the number of certified candidates nominated for an office does not exceed the number of vacancies, those nominated will be acclaimed to office.  Additional nominations for any remaining vacancies will be accepted on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

2010 MUNICIPAL ELECTION
Municipal Elections Act, 1996
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 as amended, imposes limitations on the expenses for candidates in municipal elections and also imposed requirements on candidates to report the contributions received and the manner in which funds have been expended.
It is very important for all candidates to be fully aware of the provisions of the Act and to follow those provisions correctly.  Failure to do so could result in the forfeiture of office, ineligibility to run for office in the next regular election, fines and/or imprisonment. All candidates should obtain a copy of The Municipal Elections 2010 Guide from the Clerk’s office.
CAMPAIGN SPENDING LIMITS
The maximum amount of campaign expenses prescribed by the Act is:
1.      In the case of the Mayor, a total amount of $7,500, plus $0.85 for each elector entitled to vote.
2.      In the case of Councillor, a total amount of $5,000.00, plus $0.85 for each elector entitled to vote.
The estimated maximum amount of campaign expenses permitted by candidates for the position of Mayor in the Village of Oil Springs is $8,049.95
The estimated maximum amount of campaign expenses permitted by candidates for the position of Councillor in the Village of Oil Springs $5,549.95.
The Certificate of Maximum Campaign Spending Limits, which will indicate the actual spending limit for each office, will be issued by the Clerk's office on Monday September 20, 2010.
